J Adrian Longstaffe PhD BVetMed MRCVS MBACP
Adrian Longstaffe graduated
from the Royal Veterinary College
as a veterinary surgeon in 1967,
and holds a PhD in parasite
immunology.
Pathology
After a short time as a clinician in
both the UK and the US he
worked as a diagnostic and
teaching pathologist for 16 years.
Since the late 1980s, he has
been involved nationally and
internationally in the development
and support of e-learning in
university education.
E-Learning
Starting with networks of
videodiscs and BBC Master microcomputers in the Department of Patholog at the
University of Bristol in 1987, in 1989 he founded the Wellcome Trust Tropical
Diseases Videodisc Project (now known as Topics in International Health).
In 1991 he founded the Educational Technology Service of the University of Bristol
and ran it until 1996 when it merged with another unit to become the Institute for
Learning and Research Technology (ILRT).
He was director/director emeritus of the Computers in Teaching Initiative Centre for
Medicine (CTICM) from 1989 to 2000 and a visiting fellow of the ILRT from 1998 to
2001.
Consultancy
Since 1996 he has operated as an independent consultant working mainly in the
fields of academic support, instructional design, digital image collections and more
recently in website review and website editorial tasks.
Clients include the University of Sydney, Barnett International (pharmaceutical
industry), the Centre for Medical Education (University of Bristol) and the Royal
Veterinary College (London, UK).
Dr Longstaffe combines 20 years experience as a veterinary teacher with
25 years in support of e-learning across the university spectrum. His
training in counselling and workshop leadership informs his ability to
communicate, inspire and teach in the fields of e-learning, website review
and editing, patient confidentiality, consent and Copyright.
